THE LIFE OF NEZUMI

LEARN MORE ABOUT US

OUR BRAND BIO

David Campo, founder and designer of Nezumi® has been a classic watch enthusiast for as long as he can remember. Of Spanish/Swedish heritage, David’s upbringing in the United States cultivated his passion for music, classic cars, and fashion. Inspired by the 80’s and 90’s which he spent in the US, David reflects on the profound impact of skateboarding, heavy metal music, and fashion, particularly influenced by his friend’s father, renowned stage clothing tailor Ray Brown.

While David initially pursued a career in art direction and worked with many well known international fashion brands, the urge for autonomy led him to create Nezumi® in 2011. It began as a side project with focus on denim and leather products which transitioned to watches in 2015, a pivotal moment prompting David to dedicate himself fully to Nezumi.

A lifelong passion for watches, coupled with familial ties to watchmaking, culminated in David’s first watch design, the Voiture, which gained significant traction through Kickstarter. This marked the beginning of Nezumi’s ascent, with subsequent timepieces reflecting David’s eclectic taste for aesthetics and visuals.

Origins of our name

In ancient Japan, Nezumi Kozō (real name Nakamura Jirokichi) captivated authorities and common folk alike with his mischievous grin and cunning wit. Born into poverty during the Edo period, Nezumi showcased talent in acrobatics and sleight of hand, earning him the moniker “Nezumi” (rat/mouse in Japanese) for his agility. Despite his fame as a master thief, he refused to steal from the innocent, believing in redistributing wealth to combat inequality, akin to a Japanese Robin Hood. One night, in Lord Masamune’s opulent residence, Nezumi met Sakura, Masamune’s daughter, who recognized his noble intentions. Together, they exposed Masamune’s corruption and liberated the people, inspiring generations to question authority and fight for justice. Nezumi’s legend lives on as a symbol of resilience and the power of the humble to make a difference.

Just like the legendary Nezumi Kozō, we strive to impact on the world as best as we can. Inspired by his mission to give back, our commitment to making a positive change is woven into the very fabric of our brand. We support numerous wildlife preservation organizations, animal rescue efforts, and sanctuaries worldwide and that is the story behind why our brand is called Nezumi.
